Simple Makeup Tips For Dry Skin
Updated: Aug 28, 2019
If your skin often feels tight, appears red and flaky and your lips are often chapped, then
chances are you’ve got dry skin. As unsexy as that all sounds, there’s no reason to
despair, as, with the right skin care and makeup products, you can achieve a healthy
looking, fresh-from-the-spa look every day. Let’s take a look at some of the Dos and
Don’t for this skin-type to boost your inner glam.
It’s all in the skincare
A primer may be the base for your makeup but your skin is the base for all things. If you
skip skincare or mistreat your skin at this stage, then you have already compromised
1. Start off with a gentle, fragrance and alcohol-free face, oil-based cleanser to
remove any residue or makeup, without completely stripping your face of
moisture. Facial scrubs are a hard no for this skin type, as these will further
irritate and dry out your skin.
2. Apply an oil-based moisturizing cream to help seal in moisture especially after
you’ve completed your cleansing routine. Beauty brands that include jojoba oil,
olive oil, and mineral oil tend to be soothing for dry skin. Keep a look out for
ingredients like glycerin, petrolatum, urea, hyaluronic and lactic acid sprint in that
3. Sunscreen! No, seriously, with all that’s happening up in the sky we cannot
afford to skip this crucial step. Nothing dries out your skin faster than UVB rays
and depending on where you live, you may well have plenty of that to go around.
Select a water-based sunscreen for your skin type as it will help to hydrate your
skin as it protects. (Not all heroes wear capes.)
Makeup products for dry skin
You’ve probably picked up on a pattern by now, but when it comes to choosing makeup
products, the aim is to hydrate.
1. Hydrating Primers:
The golden rules of makeup still apply to everyone, regardless of their skin type. You, my dear friend, still need to prime your skin before you apply the rest of your makeup products. Look for a primer with the magic ingredient dimethicone (the word even sounds like it came from Hogwarts). This ingredient is excellent at conditioning and lubricating your skin in
preparation for the rest of your makeup ritual.
2. Water-based foundation:
If it has the words “matte” or “silicone” anywhere on the packaging, go right ahead and toss it. Why? Well, for starters, silicone foundations tend to cling to dry patches, which will result in an uneven finish. While you’re at it, stay away from pressed powders and powder foundations in general. These will cause you to flake and dry out even more. Liquid foundation is where it’s at for you my lovelies. They will hydrate your skin and leave you with
a natural looking ethereal glow.
3. Moisturizing concealers:
Liquid concealers that are alcohol and fragrance-free
can work wonders for counteracting dark spots, redness, and blemishes without
irritating your skin.
4. Hydrating lippies:
Nope! I heard you ask about licking those lips and I’m saying (with lots of love) absolutely not. That simply will not do honey. If you’re chap and crack-prone, consider natural oil-based hydrating lipsticks, balms and glosses. Beauty brands that contain shea butter and glycerin are particularly dry-skin friendly. Also, you could get into the habit of exfoliating your lips to remove dead cells and make them more receptive to your product.
5. Blenders, not brushes:
This one is a doozy. The bristles of makeup brushes can often act as exfoliants against dry skin! Bouncing a damp beauty blender against your face when applying your foundation will help to reduce flakiness by pressing your foundation into your skin without causing unnecessary irritation.
6. Hydrating mist:
This is the last but possibly the most important step to giving you a picturesque dewy finish. Mists that contain Vitamin E or hyaluronic acid will help to melt powdered product into your skin while simultaneously nourishing and hydrating your skin cells.
